My Devotional for December 11, 2011

At work they asked a few people to write Advent Devotions. Even though I claim to be a writer I didn't think I could write a devotion. I had help writing it but I'm happy with the results:

For a child has been born for us,
A son given to us;
Authority rests upon his shoulders,
And he is named Wonderful counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  (Isaiah 9:6)

My favorite hymn is “Come, thou fount of every blessing.”  Even though it’s not a “true” advent hymn, the words invite God to come to us.

Come, Thou Fount of Ev’ry Blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace.
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the Mount? I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of God’s unchanging love!

The reason this hymn is my favorite is that I can remember singing it especially when I was little.  This hymn takes me back to the days when I was about 10, and everybody was there at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Hartsville.  I can picture so many of the leaders that helped to keep the church running.   It was a very peaceful time in my life and in the life of the church.
So every time I hear this particular hymn, I think of peaceful days gone by.  And while the song makes me smile today, I also know that Jesus bring me peace and calm when I need it.   Jesus is the prince of Peace, and he helps all our souls to sing.

So I hope this Advent and Christmas seasons that you will find love and joy, especially knowing the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for songs, that are filled with love and joy, and for smiles, and memories of days gone by.  Tune our hearts to sing Your grace throughout this Advent season, and beyond. In the name of Christ. Amen.
